Communication Officer
About the Job
Based in Mogadishu, the Communication Officer contributes to the design, planning and implementation of Communication activities. He/she represents the SSWC externally and contributes to building the necessary understanding, acceptance and support of the SSWC among key stakeholders in all the Area of Responsibility.
Technical Focus
The Communication officer will be responsible for the development of publishing materials as part of the Communication and Outreach strategy for SSWC.
Tasks and responsibilities
Contribute to the development and strengthening of internal communication, web publishing and media-relations activities of the all the programs.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Ensure the implementation of the SSWC Communications strategy
- Design and produce materials that effectively communicate SSWC’s mission, values and program activities to local audiences, including the general public, government, the NGO community and the corporate sector.
- Develop and maintain professional contacts and personal relationships with key local print, radio and TV media and assist them by offering story opportunities, arranging project visits and interviews
- Write a range of media material, ensuring it remains consistent, upbeat and delivered in a timely fashion
- Serve as media advisor to the Executive Director, Head of Programs and other senior managers and assist them with the development of a crisis management plan.
- Identify and train staff who can provide written and visual information on their projects for use in local and international communications activities
- Manage the flow of internal communications so that all national staff are fully informed of relevant office plans and activities
- Keep the Director and other senior management staff informed on local and international news and trends that have an impact on the work of SSWC
- Prepare promotional communications resource packages for Program Head as and when required for overseas visits
- Work with senior management to ensure that SSWC’s corporate identity is implemented consistently at national, regional and project office levels.
- Produce a steady flow of written and photographic resources on local programs for use in the communications and marketing activities of SSWC fundraising.
- Respond to specific requests from other SSWC offices for information, stories and photos on the projects they are implementing.
- Ensure that written and photographic resources are lodged in the SSWC communications databases
- Develop and maintain networks with local and international media correspondents based locally and look for ways to interest them in SSWC’s work.
- Respond to media inquiries
- Perform other related duties as required.
About you
Interested? You should possess the following qualifications and experiences and have the following competencies:
This is a National position based in Mogadishu.
- University degree in Communications, Languages or Journalism;
- At least 3 years’ experience in communication department or prevention programme;
- Fluency in spoken and written English and Somali languages;
- A high level of computer literacy and preferably familiarity with digital communication tools; Excellent analytical, networking and presentation skills;
- Proven planning and organization skills;
- Knowledge of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is an added advantage.
- Good knowledge of the social, economic and political environment of Somalia.
